Member of the Directors’ Affairs and Governance Committee and the Social, Ethics and Sustainability Committee. 

Professional Background: 
Khotso Mokhele is a respected science and innovation leader with a career spanning academia, research, governance and national advisory roles. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of South Africa’s National Research Foundation, where he played a central role in shaping the country’s research and innovation system. He also served as Chancellor of the University of the Free State and as Special Advisor to two Ministers of Science and Technology. 

Khotso represented South Africa on the executive board of UNESCO and served as Vice President of the International Science Council. In recognition of his contribution to strengthening scientific relations between South Africa and France, he was awarded the title of Member of the Legion of Honour by the Republic of France. 

In addition to his role at MTN, he is the Non-Executive Chairman of Hans Merensky Holdings (Pty) Limited, Westfalia Fruit International (UK) and the Hans Merensky Legacy Foundation. He also holds non-executive directorships through personal shareholding in Kenosi Investment Holdings, Delta Zero Corporation (Pty) Limited (non-operating), Industrial Marketing Corporation of South Africa (non-operating) and Seasoned Capital. 

Qualifications: Khotso holds degrees in agriculture and food science, including a BSc in Agriculture, an MSc in Food Science and a PhD in Microbiology, and has been awarded several honorary doctorates from various institutions.
