Football is the common language that people speak around the globe. MTN is about delivering communication services and our sponsorship of football on the continent is a natural extension of this commitment.

MTN is the title sponsor of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) 2006 and 2008 African Cup of Nations finals and sees the sponsorship as a catalyst for football excellence in Africa.

MTN’s partnership with CAF also includes the title sponsorship of another African tournament – the CAF Champions League. The MTN CAF Champions League is the most prestigious club competition on the continent, and sees teams from the national leagues of Africa battling it out for the honour of becoming the best club team in Africa. Along with the glory of being known as Africa’s best club team, the tournament carries prize money of US$ 1 million for the winners and US$750 000 for the finalists, making the MTN CAF Champions League the richest club competition in Africa.

Prior to these key sponsorships, MTN had already established strong links with the greatest achievers in African football through the MTN CAF Awards, the annual gala ceremony where the African Player of the Year, among other key awards, is announced.

MTN’s commitment to football on the African continent is evident in various other soccer sponsorships in the countries where MTN operates. These include, among others, the African Soccer Show, which is televised in five African countries; the sponsorship of the football associations in Cameroon and Swaziland; and three club sponsorships in South Africa.

In 2005, the MTN Group announced the sponsorship of Africa’s biggest football website, MTNfootball.com, a website dedicated to coverage of the game on the continent, particularly the MTN Africa Cup of Nations and the MTN CAF African Champions League. It is the only Pan-African website of its kind and offers extensive coverage for fervent followers of the game.

MTNfootball.com has become a valuable tool for journalists, students and lovers of the game of football.
