MTN pushes accessibility drive by reducing cellphone rates and introducing a R10 Recharge Voucher

MTN South Africa announced the reduction of its cellphone costs by up to 40%, effective from Tuesday 11 June 2006. MTN Pay As You Go (PAYG) subscribers can expect lower local rates during standard times of 5pm-8pm, on weekdays.

The introduction of a standard rate to all local networks will see call rates drop to R1.99 per minute (including VAT) for all customers on the Call Per Second package, as opposed to the previous price of R3.20.

In line with the reduced call costs, MTN introduced a new R10.00 recharge voucher as well. The new R10.00 voucher is currently available in an electronic and logical format and will soon become available in a physical format. This lower denomination recharge voucher has been introduced as a result of MTN’s focus on what consumers can afford.

“MTN is committed to offering its consumers reduced call costs on the various packages resulting in the delivery of MTN’s continued plan to offer its customers value for money. This initial cut in price is all part of MTN’s plan to continue reducing costs to our customers in the varied packages on offer and to offer our customers value for money. MTN also commits itself to continue delivering excellent customer service,” said Donovan Smith, Consumer Segment General Manger, MTN SA.

“MTN operates in a very competitive environment, and the challenge is for MTN to continue providing competitive costs which are on par with what South African consumers can afford”, added Smith. The new tariff will be effective immediately for pre-paid customers on Call Per Second and Call Per Second Plus packages with no special subscription, starter pack or cell number required.

The reduced call costs will be accompanied by the introduction of the PAYG Call per Second package as the default PAYG package for all new activations. “MTN realised that its subscribers perceive the classic PAYG package rates to being more costly than the Per Second billing structure. We are committed to being accessible and to satisfying MTN’s subscriber needs, hence the change of allowing all new subscribers to be billed on the Per Second billing system and giving existing subscribers the opportunity to change over to the Call Per Second package” said Smith.
