2004
- MTN celebrates 10 years of operations.
- MTN records almost 10 million subscribers across all its operations.
- MTN qualifies for inclusion in the JSE Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Index.
2005
- MTN records 14 million subscribers across its operations, 8 million of whom are in South Africa.
- MTN capital investments amount to R7,6 billion.
- MTN International opens office in Iran (April).
2006
- MTN Group Limited acquired Investcom LLC for a total of US$5 526 billion (R33,5 billion). This transaction has created a pre-eminent mobile operator in the emerging markets of Africa and the Middle East operating mobile networks in 21 countries, covering a population under licence on a combined basis of approximately 488 million people and serving in excess of 28 million subscribers.
- FIFA™ 2010 sponsorship announced. MTN Group will be the exclusive global mobile sponsor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, which will be held on the African continent for the first time in FIFA™’s 50-year history.
- Rural Telephone Project (‘Phone Lady Initiative’) of the MTN Nigeria Foundation won the 2006 GSM Association award in the category of Best Mobile Community Service.

the only company to appear in the FM’s top 20 in all four years since its
inception. |
- MTN Group recognised as the African Mobile Operator of the Year at the inaugural CommsMEA Awards in Dubai.
- MTN received the gold award in the direct marketing category of the Sunday Times Marketing Excellence Awards 2006 for the
MTNFootball.com website. The company also received a gold award in the Sponsorship marketing category for its sponsorship of the MTN Africa Cup of Nations.
- MTN snatched the Progressive Company of the Year award at the Black Management Forum Presidential Awards for Business Leadership.
- The MTN Group was awarded the Bond Exchange of South Africa’s (BESA) Spire Award for the Best Debt Issue of 2006 for its R5 billion four-year bond (MTN01) and received fifth place for its R1,3 billion eight-year bond (MTN02) in the same category.
